For the Bread:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great)

For the Cinnamon Swirl:

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Glaze (optional):

1 cup powdered sugar

1-2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan and set aside.

    Prepare the Cinnamon Swirl: In a small bowl, mix together the 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon flour. Drizzle in the melted butter and stir until all ingredients are combined and form a thick paste. Set aside.

      Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

        Cream Butter and Sugars: In another bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

          Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

            Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mix to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and finish with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

              Fold in Apples: Gently fold the diced apple into the batter until evenly distributed.

                Layering for the Swirl: Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Spread half of the cinnamon swirl mixture evenly over the batter. Pour the second half of the batter on top, and then dollop the remaining cinnamon swirl mixture over the top. Using a knife, swirl through the batter to create a marbled effect.

                  Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

                    Cool and Glaze: Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. If desired, mix powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract to make the glaze, then drizzle over the cooled loaf.
