4 slices of whole-grain bread

¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

In a mixing bowl, combine the drained chickpeas, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Use a fork or a potato masher to gently mash the mixture until the chickpeas are roughly broken down but still retain some texture.
