Ingredients

1 loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup raisins (or more if desired)

1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Place the cubed cinnamon raisin bread evenly in the dish.

Make the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until thoroughly combined.

Combine with Bread: Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, making sure all pieces are soaked. Gently fold in the raisins and nuts (if using) for added texture and flavor.

Soak the Bread: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. For best results, refrigerate for 2-4 hours or overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard.

Bake the French Toast: Remove the plastic wrap (if previously refrigerated) and place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Serve: Let the French toast bake cool for about 5 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, slice into squares, and serve warm with maple syrup drizzled on top.
