Ingredients

6 slices of thick bread (preferably sourdough or brioche)

3 large eggs

1/2 cup milk (whole or almond for a dairy-free version)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar (for extra sweetness, optional)

2 tablespoons melted butter (or coconut oil for a dairy-free option)

For cinnamon sugar coating: 1/4 cup sugar + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Prep the Bread: Start by cutting each slice of thick bread into 3 equal strips, resembling French toast sticks. You can trim the edges if desired, but it's not necessary.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar (if using) until well combined.

Soak the Sticks: Dip each bread stick into the custard mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on each side, so the bread absorbs the mixture. Make sure not to soak them for too long, or they will become too soggy.

Prepare the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3-5 minutes.

Coat the Sticks: Lightly brush each soaked French toast stick with melted butter (or coconut oil) to help them crisp up in the air fryer.

Air Fry the French Toast Sticks: Place the sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding to ensure they cook evenly. You may need to cook in batches.

Cooking Time: Air fry the French toast sticks at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes. Flip them halfway through for an even golden color.

Make Cinnamon Sugar: While the sticks are cooking, mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: Once cooked, remove the sticks from the air fryer, allowing them to cool for 1-2 minutes, then toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until thoroughly coated.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for extra sweetness.
