Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for flavor)

1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for a crispy texture)

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1 large egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the Brown Gravy:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 cups beef broth (preferably low sodium)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:

    - In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined but do not overwork the meat.

      - Form the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Use your thumb to make a small indentation in the center of each patty; this helps prevent them from puffing up while cooking.

        Cook the Patties:

          - Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F). Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

            Make the Brown Gravy:

              - In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, then add the sliced onion. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and lightly caramelized.

                - Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir, cooking it for about a minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.

                  - Slowly whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing it to thicken for about 5-7 minutes.

                    - Stir in the soy sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.

                      Combine and Serve:

                        - Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Allow them to simmer in the gravy for an additional 2-3 minutes to absorb the flavors.

                          - Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

                            Plate and Enjoy:

                              - Serve the Salisbury steaks with a generous helping of brown gravy over the top. They pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice and a side of steamed vegetables!
