Ingredients

For the Crust:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Caramel Filling:

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon sea salt (plus more for topping)

For the Topping:

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later.

Make the Crust: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add in the flour and salt, mixing until just combined. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until just golden. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Prepare the Caramel Filling: In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, unsalted butter, and heavy cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a gentle boil; let it boil for about 1 minute. Remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and sea salt. Allow the caramel to cool for a few minutes before pouring it over the crust.

Make the Topping: In a small bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, melted butter, and sea salt until crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture over the caramel filling.

Bake Again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is a golden brown and the caramel bubbles slightly around the edges.

Cool & Slice: Once done, take the bars out of the oven and let them cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cool, lift the bars out using the parchment paper overhang and slice them into squares.

Serve: For an extra touch, sprinkle a little flaky sea salt on top just before serving. Enjoy your delicious salted caramel butter bars with a cup of coffee or a glass of milk!
