Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)

1 cup fig jam (preferably homemade or all-natural)

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup beef or vegetable broth

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (for garnish)

Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for serving)

Instructions

Brown the Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef or turkey and brown it for about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Sauté Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the meat. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.

Combine Ingredients: In your slow cooker, add the browned beef and onion mixture along with kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes (with their juices), fig jam, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and broth. Stir well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Cook the Chili: Cover the slow cooker and set it on low heat. Allow the chili to cook for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours. The longer it cooks, the more the flavors will meld.

Final Touches: Once cooked, taste and adjust seasonings if needed. If you desire a thicker chili, let it cook uncovered for the last 30 minutes.

Serve and Garnish: Ladle the fig jam chili into bowls. Top with a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for added flavor.
