Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

3/4 cup fresh cranberries, chopped (or dried cranberries)

Zest of 1 large orange

1/2 cup buttermilk (or plain yogurt)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of milk for brushing)

For Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons orange juice

Zest of 1 orange

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.

Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cranberries and Zest: Stir in the chopped cranberries and orange zest until evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Bring Together: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture. Gently fold with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined, being careful not to overmix. The dough should be slightly sticky.

Form the Scones: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. With floured hands, gently pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut into wedges (like a pizza) or use a biscuit cutter for round scones.

Prepare for Baking: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the egg wash for a beautiful golden finish.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until lightly golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean upon testing.

Make the Glaze: While the scones are baking, prepare the glaze by combining the powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest in a small bowl until smooth.

Cool and Glaze: Allow the scones to cool for about 5 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. Drizzle the glaze over the warm scones for a sweet finish.

Serve: Enjoy the scones warm or at room temperature. They pair wonderfully with tea or coffee!
